Christchurch is the main centre for the Canterbury region, and is known as "The Garden City" for its parks and rivers. Canterbury region is upon flat riverine plains to the east of the southern alps, and is situated close to banks penninsula, the reminants of volcanic activity.
Post-earthquake, chistchurch has suffered significant losses in infrasture especially in the CBD area dubbed "The red zone" because of its inacessability.
Christchurch has two of New Zealands nine universities - Canterbury University and Lincoln University. Canterbury Univeristy's main flagship programs are engineering and law. Lincoln University centres around primary industries, environmental science and management.
